Behind SeviCares
Across the world, some 500 million menstruators are victims of period poverty, lacking access to hygienic sanitary products. Period poverty is a problem especially prevalent among the homeless populations of major cities across America. SeviCares strongly believes that menstrual products are a necessity, not a luxury.
SeviCares has launched a campaign called "PERIOD." to heighten awareness to the challenges faced by homeless menstruators, and to raise funds to create much needed menstrual hygiene care packages.
SeviCares fundraises for menstrual hygiene care packages through Benevity, a charitable donation management platform used by hundreds of Fortune 1000 companies that enables workplace donation giving and matching.
How do care packages help?
The scale of the US homelessness problem is well-publicized. Their daily search for food and safe shelter poses challenges few of us can ever imagine. Approximately 33% of San Francisco’s homeless population are menstruators. Life for them can be especially difficult during the onset of their monthly menstruation cycles.
Menstruators spend thousands of dollars on hygiene products every year, making the menstrual hygiene products industry a $40 billion dollar business. A menstruator who is homeless, who struggles to feed and shelter herself (and sometimes their children as well) does not have the financial means to purchase these supplies. Their lack of access to basic hygiene products can often lead to health issues such as Toxic Shock Syndrome, yeast infections or other bacterial infections.
Providing care packages that include sanitary items can help lift a burden off homeless menstruators shoulders.
